I'm a bit surprised that there don't seem to be any adaptations that hook into the head pre-amps and use an ADC to give a view of what the read signal actually looks like. Maybe that's asking too much--there are certainly MCUs with sufficiently fast ADCs and memory to do this. --Chuck
