At its introduction,it was one of few static CMOS CPUs. You could run
it from batteries and stop the clock when not needed. Perfect for
telemetry. I think the Intersil 6100 was another, but required 12-bit
wide memory.

9 bit memory also was rare.
Is that the meanng of 'a bit on the side' ?
Did any use a INDUSTRY STANDARD UART, with a external
FIFO chip?
The DEC DZ11 uses the standard 40 pin 'dumb UARTS' and feeds the
receive data into FIFO ICs. I am sure there are others.
