Not quite lost. The 1802 crowd is doing amazing things.

And if you know anything about the 1802, it's, uh, not so speedy.
At its introduction,it was one of few static CMOS CPUs. You could run
it from batteries and stop the clock when not needed. Perfect for
telemetry. I think the Intersil 6100 was another, but required 12-bit
wide memory.
