Here (UK) the dominant machines were 'Traction engines' and 'Ploughing machines'. These could be used to haul wagons but for ploughing they parked at the edge of the field and pulled a plough across using a cable. I'm not sure how it was returned - maybe with another engine, or manually, unloaded. But they avoided crossing the field.
