I wonder if anyone has done a study of high-profile auction sale prices vs apples to apples contemporary sales prices (ebay, etc) of the same item. Paul Allen's [item name] will always sell for more that Joe Schmo's [item name]. Buyer can forever say this was Paul Allen's [item name]. The providence Sorry Joe Schmo, you're items must be sold on Ebay at regular prices. Provenance is everything on the high-end collectibles market.
