6 bit characters were fine if you didn't care about proper
capitalization and your only language was English.

The point is you have a different national code page under ASCII.
Accents should have been like hard copy terminals, as a over strike
character for video terminals.
Oddly it is the loss of [] that I complain about, with the pre-IBM PC
ASCII.
