I ran into a similar situation with a newer-than-P3 single-drive
motherboard. I'd switch from the internal 3.5" 1.44M drive to an
external 5.25" 360K drive. It turns out that the onboard SuperIO chip
didn't have enough drive current to handle a 5.25" drive with 150 ohm
pullup terminators. Changed the 150 ohm packs out for 2Kohm and things
worked fine.
IIRC, this was a Socket 939 system. Handled FM very well. You could
also construct a small buffer board using something like 7407s to
provide a little more drive.
