At its
introduction,it was one of few static CMOS CPUs. You could run
it from batteries and stop the clock when not needed. Perfect for
telemetry. I think the Intersil 6100 was another, but required 12-bit
wide memory.

Maybe, but not before some manuals got out with it included. I have
seen one of the manuals that got printed and hastily withdrawn, with a
footnote 'plus 20 minutes on Saturday night'.

I would apply that label to the CDC 6600 (1964).
I think Bill was thinking in terms of RISC as what could been avoided by
using a wrapper!
