People have built electronics to connect to a floppy cable and emulate a drive
electronically. Difficult to catch the timing on flux changes and digitize.
Not hard for floppies. Harder but still doable for MFM hard drives -- David Gesswein did
a very impressive version that's surprisingly inexpensive, using a BeagleBone Black or
Green as the control engine. I have one, it works perfectly.
