Grant;

Wow, that is very helpful.  I had downloaded xterm from 
invisible-island.net and executed a ./configure.  I complained that I 
lacked the Athena X widgets, so I paused on it.

I'm going to give this another try.

I'd like to thank all the kind folks who posted a response to my initial 
question.
