Ah ha!  Pulling the dead battery has brought the Blit back to life.
It passes self-tests and now is screaming "WAITING FOR KEYBOARD
STATUS".

Back to the search for a compatible keyboard.  Two, really, since I
also have a 730+ that needs one.
