One question that could be asked, is - If IBM PC hardware had 'frozen' in
this basic state for a number of years, much as did the C-64 hardware, how
long would it have taken for the software to equal what we've seen
demonstrated here?

Necessity is the mother of invention.. makes one wonder just what's been
missed, with the rapid evolution of x86 and the now near-universal
availability of cheap compute cycles and vast system resources.
