Jim, I'd try reaching out to Dale Heatherington - he wrote the firmware 
for the Smartmodem line. http://www.wa4dsy.com/robot/home/about

At one point either he or Dennis Hayes had source code to the Hayes 1200B 
firmware online, but I can't find it any longer. :(
