As much fun as the Silicon Valley surplus outlets were, I don't think
any could hold a candle to the old post WWII surplus outlets.  I think
John Meshna was the last of those.

My favorite was "surplus row" on S. Michigan Ave. in Chicago.   I know
that New York had a similar electronics slum...
