Yes, there were flame wars--but nothing that sank to the level of 
depravity of flame wars on the web.

...and it could be just that I hung out on certain newsgroups with a 
more refined clientèle.  Whatever.  This was maybe circa 1981--before 
the IBM PC as well.  You know, ones that discussed questions such as "Do 
all Indo-European languages use a derivation of "ti" or "cha" for the 
infusion of certain plants in hot water?"  (Answer: no).
